Second Self Reflection

This is my second self reflection, and I will reflect on “Low Productivity during World Cup season”, “Cyber Wellness”, “Emotional Intelligence” and “English Language”.

For the “Low Productivity during World Cup season”, at first when I read the news, I was convinced that World Cup actually lower the productivity of workers as they might spend a lot of time in watching the game late at night and will not have enough energy and mood to work in the next morning. But however, after deep deliberation, I feel that World Cup will not affect the work productivity. Through this topic, I’ve learned how to see things in a different point of views from others.

For “Cyber Wellness”, I’ve learned that we should not misuse cyber and also, we must also learn how to protect ourselves from cyber scam etc. Parents also played an important role in helping their kids to avoid harms from cyber.

Next, is “Emotional intelligence” This topic allows m to express my thoughts for teenagers who have low Emotional intelligence. Besides spreading the message that people should not end their life of hurt them when they met problem, at the same time, I also gave myself a gentle reminder as when if I face a problem in the future, I’ll try to keep my mind cool and try to solve the problem and not run away from it.

Lastly, “English Language” Since young, I grew up in a Chinese speaking family and English is never my forte. I had many strugglers since primary school until now. I always asked myself why, why is it so important to ace English in Singapore. I felt reluctant to continue in improving my English at times and feel like giving up and just stay at my current English standard, but this topic reminded me that English is very important in the society now and there is no reason for me to stop improving my English.

After all the blog topic given by Mr. Christopher Pang, I specially want to thank Mr. Christ for giving us all the topics and help us to mature and be more able to analysis and write.

Signing off,

English Language

English is an international language and people from all around the world are able to communicate with each other is because of English.

In this face paced world, acing in English means advantage to everything. In a working society right now, companies all look for potential communicators and writers to help company to achieve deals and satisfy clients.

English is like a common language, imagine a world without English, how can trade and communication go on? Conflicts and misunderstanding will occur as soon as there is no common language to communicate. What if a country met danger and they do not have a common language to communicate with other country to seek help?

Every single second, almost all the things around us is written in English. Thus, if one does not know English language, the person will be lost and everything around will seems alien to the person.

In Singapore, learning English is the most important and first thing we should know in education. When comes to PSLE or GCE O LEVEL, English is a compulsory subject in order for us to move on to the next level of education.

Beside the use of communicating and understanding, English is also a very flexible language and it allows same thought to be expressed in several ways.

In conclusion, English language is a powerful language and people can’t live without. Without English, the world will be in chaos.

Self reflection Part 2

On the first self-reflection I shared my blogging experience and how I felt about blogging on the first 4 articles, so for this reflection I will be sharing how I felt about the following blogging topics and conclude blogging as a whole.

I, personally liked the topic on EQ, as I think that EQ is very Important and I think that it should take priority over IQ, a person with high IQ but has a low EQ will most likely perform better as an individual, however lacking in teamwork and HR comparing to someone with high EQ but lower IQ, but it the society, people of high EQ are more in demand in terms of business because in my opinion working as a team will bring more results compared to working as an individual.

The 14 weeks of blogging was very rewarding as it helped me to build social and environmental and even cyber awareness as well as cultivate good habits such as reading and recycling. I also I felt an slight improvement in my writing skills and mature a little upon writing the blog entries. On a whole I was delighted to have been given a chance to not so much of impress but rather express myself on the current affairs on this blog. My best regards.

Self-Reflection

I have never thought that studying this module, Effective Writing Skills, would involve me in writing blog entries about certain world issues which is totally different from personal blogging. This exercise has definitely taught me how to be more aware and alert of the current affairs around me and I could not disagree that I have grown to be more mature. It has definitely changed my way of thinking too.

Regarding the topic about "Environment degradation", I personally liked it very much. All along, I've known about helping the earth. Small little actions like switching off the lights when it's not in use and recycling materials like plastics and papers can help conserve the environment. Blogging about this article has made me look deeper into it and realise how much damage human had caused the world to have a higher chance of crumbling down due to its non-reversible process.

Last but not least, regarding the topic about "MOE reducing the weightage of Mother Tongue in PSLE", if i did not write about this article, I would not have known that MOE is trying to reduce the weightage of Mother Tongue. Though Mother Tongue might be very limited and does not provide a large number of words or expression, it is still a language of origin and makes other people feel more belonged.

Therefore, having this exercise has made me realised that there are more things happening in the world than what I've thought so. It also deepens my knowlegde about things that are happening around me and has changed my point of view towards those events.

English language

Over the years, English language has become one of our principal assets. it does not require any further argument to establish the advantage English language has brought to us at the international level. English language comes to our aid in our commercial transactions throughout the globe. English is the language of the latest business management in the world. English is a means not only for international commerce; it has become increasingly essential for inter-state commerce and communication.

I believe the world has understood the importance of english language as most country including the developing countries such as indonesia and china are prioritizing english language and putting as a subjects in most schools either as primary or secondary language. As english will be the basic requirement when looking for a job upon graduation as no one will hire a person who cannot speak english as it will be difficult for the individual to work with a team thus. Without understanding english its very difficult to communicate as english has become a common language.

However making english as a common language has its defect, as people might tend to lose thier identity as they do not practice their own native language such as bahasa and chinese

Emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is a person's ability to understand their own emotions and those of others, and to act appropriately using these emotions.

Nowadays, I find that teenagers lack emotional intelligence. When problems like relationship, money issue or family problem occurs, they will tend to lose the ability to think and react correctly.

For example in recent years, many teenagers self harm when they met problems. One example of self harm is by cutting their wrist. They felt that by cutting their own wrist, they could replace the pain in their heart.

Emotional intelligence is something that cannot be taught. The only way to have emotional intelligence is to learn from past experience or own mistake. Besides that, family support is also very important. If a teenager does not have a complete family, they will lose the ability to think correctly and come to the worst, they will seek suicide when they face problems which they think that can’t be solved. By doing these foolish actions, they are actually not easing their pain. Furthermore, they will add pain to people around them, people who care about them.

In conclusion, having good emotional intelligence is very important.

Cyber Wellness

Cyber wellness refers to the positive well-being of internet users and a healthy cyber culture for the Internet community. It involves an understanding of the risks of harmful online behavior, an awareness of how to protect oneself and other Internet users from such behavior, and recognition of the power of the Internet to benefit oneself and the community at large.

For children and young people this helping them to realize that when they use the internet and mobile technologies, they are sending, receiving and communicating in a public space. Cyber wellness is about learning the skills to use and communicate with these technologies properly, keeping safe and secure, and learning how to publish, disclose and interpret sources of information online and how to respect other users.

The Internet has become an integral part of modern life and children are most vulnerable to the threats. With the increasing use of the Internet as a source of information for teaching as well as for class and project work, it is important for the school and parents to expose our children to some of the danger of the net. The solution to this problem is not to ban them from using the Internet but to teach them how to protect themselves by raising ‘Cyber Awareness’.

Emotional Intelligence

Personally, I find the article "Recruiting Emotional Intelligence Trumps Technical Know-H0w" very interesting.

Softchoice Corp has taken a very special approach by recruiting employees based on their EQ instead of the usual IQ. It is also very interesting to know that the company actually 'wants' their employees to like dogs and even allowed them to take their dogs to work!

After reading through the article, I find that Softchoice Corp is a very creative corporation.
Their approach is not only wise but also 'out of the box'.
The phrase "They realize that, the shortage of skills, they are probably better off hiring for attitude and then training for skill," has made me realised that a good attitude is more important than just having good skills.
One with a good attitude can always work harder to achieve better results.
Whereas, one with bad attitude can never achieve good results because they are not willing to put in more effort.

Cyber wellness

The internet displays both good and bad information and it could be both useful and harmful depending on the user, which is why cyber wellness is so essential to ensure the proper use of the internet

Cyber wellness is essential to computer users especially, one who spent over 5 hours on the computer each day. The article mentioned that Singaporeans are not vigilant when it comes to cyber assaults. They do not report illegal activities also display ignorance about copyright laws which a serious crime is also known as plagiarism which was one of the blog topics we’re assigned to. I believe we all know the importance of respecting one’s work. Ironically they claim to be street-smart in cyber space.

I believe that cyber wellness should be practiced and cultivated upon the use of internet as there is risk of being exposed to unsuitable content such as pornography, also harmful behavior. By cultivating cyber wellness it helps in understanding harmful online behavior and ways to protect oneself from such behavior.
Some of the ways to build cyber wellness are, involvement of parents in cyber wellness among youth, filtering the content to only display useful and relevant information, educating them about the potential risk of cyber space.

Having said that, it’s not always easy to control such behavior as the education now requires much use of the internet and it’s hard not to come across harmful articles.

Cyber Wellness

The definition of Cyber-wellness is to be responsivle, respectful and rational, as well as to be alert to scams and learn how to protect oneself in the virtual world.

Being in the 21st century, the internet has become one of the most important tool in the world today.
Therefore, it is important for us learn more about cyber-wellness in order to ensure Internet safety.

More people are losing control over the amount of time they are spending online. Some people even think that life without the Internet is meaningless and depressing. This is a bad sign.
We should not misuse the Internet and should be aware of the dangers posed in the Internet.

Personally, the Internet has been a great help in my studies.
Without the Internet, it would have been tedious for me to look for information needed for reports and projects.
So as a frequent user of the Internet, I feel that it is important for me to know more about Cyber-wellness so as to protect myself from any possible threats like cyber-bullying etc.

Self-reflection

Ever since I started on this assignment, I have become more conscious about the events occurring around me.
Through this exercise, I have learnt to understand and share my views about various interesting events.

Personally, I find the article on the World Environment Day very interesting.
The article has motivated me to learn more about environmental issues.

The article on Plagiarism has taught me the importance of originality.
I have learnt that a simple action like 'copying' and 'pasting' information found on the internet might be wrong or even illegal.

In conclusion, I have benefited from this exercise by gaining more knowledge from the various events occurring around me. I have learnt to look at things at a different point of view instead of 'judging a book by its cover'.

Emotional Inteligence

In the modern world, EQ is a very important quality. From daily activities to looking for a job especially in a postion of a leader, in fact it may even be more important than IQ. Having a adequate EQ gives an individual the edge when it comes to HR, which is important in businss, because to be able to achive at least a manager position, they have to be able to relate to thier underling's work problem even to thier personal complains. People of better EQ are able to inspire and motivate team member to increase productivity in thier work also pariticipate in team related activities, not only work it could also be in other aspect such as team sports like rugby and football

More and more employers are looking for a very flexible, very adaptive, somebody who can manage and navigate well in a very ambiguous environment. Also having good EQ will also give them the edge in time management, stress management even anger management. Also the ever-increasing business emphasis on technology and globalization it will mean more
communication, cooperation, and teamwork is necessary to get projects completed on time and on budget.
Companies have to hire good communicators if they want to survive.

in conclusion i would like to highlight that EQ is essential in all aspects of life. Business emphasises on people has a high EQ rather than IQ as business need people who can paricipate in team discussion and works well with people rather than a skillfull individual but is not very good in working as a team.

Higher EQ = Better?

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to monitor one's own and others' feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use the information to guide ones' thinking and actions. People who has a higher EQ are better at perceiving, evaluating and managing emotions. They are more agreeable to things, more "open" and has more positive social experiences. Thus, they settle situations in a calm manner.

It is indicated that emotional intelligence is a powerful key to leadership. Today, Intelligence itself is not enough to succeed in businesses. In the working industry today, companies only tries to recruit those who has higher EQ because they believe that they have the essential skills to succeed and are capable of contributing more in the company. More and more companies are also recognizing the benefits in specializing their staffs in the area of Emotional Intelligence because when we are dealing with people, we don't only deal with their minds but also their feelings. This also strengthens the bonds between people and maintains the relationship well.

Emotional Intelligence brings out the best in us because it results in positive emotions, better performances and professional success. Therefore, I feel that Emotional Intelligence is an essential tool for everyone because it makes things easier as we're able to understand others better, thus putting ourselves in other people's shoe too.

Importance of English Language

English is the language of the world and it is widely used, be it on the internet or real life. Almost every language book has translated English version which makes it easier to get information of the world.

It is highly essential to know English as a form of communication. English is a code we all use to express ourselves and also, to communicate with one another. English language has been a basic capacity in distingushing humans from other living beings, therefore it is capable of expressing ideas and concepts as well as moods, feelings and attitude. Since English is getting more common among countries, it makes it easier for people from around the world to communicate with each other.

As seen from the articles, it is said that China is trying to make it compulsory for most of their citizens to learn English. This shows that China is trying to catch up with other countries, and do not want to create any fuss if there's foreigners visiting China because those foreigners might not know how to speak China's native language. Since China has cheap labour, foreigners tend to migrate over and start investing, therefore English has became more and more important for them, so as to communicate well with the foreigners to prevent hassles and troubles. Sometimes, the citizens from China might even want migrate to elsewhere to study or work, therefore they also need English to communicate with others.

Movies in other languages has also been translated to English or at least have English subtitles. This shows that there is no need for any futher arguement to establish the advantage English language has brought to us at international level. In conclusion, I think that China made the right decision in making English compulsory for most of its citzens because it'll be helpful in the outside world and it will also benefit its economy and culture as well.

-Kimberley

CyberWellness

CyberWellness is a term which includes not only about concerns around safety and security online, but also taking people's psychological and emotion well-being into account. Using the internet for various purposes has been very common now adays, thus people have to be careful and more cautious. This does not only applies to the younger people, but also to the older ones.

When using the internet and mobile technologies, we are sending, recieving and communicating in a public space. CyberWellness will teach us how to use and communicate with such techonologies properly, keeping safe and secure, learning how to disclose sources of information online and also how to respect other users.

Though there are alot of people who spend more than 10 hours on the internet each week, most of them are not knowledgable or aware about CyberWellness, which also means they do not know much about protecting themselves from harmful online behaviors. There are a few types of cyber crimes which includes cyberbullying, plagarism and piracy.

Everyone is responsible in educating themselves by using the internet correctly. The government has taken measures to ensure that, by holding workshops and events. Therefore, I think the schools and parents should also participate and help by educating the students and their child so as to lessen the government's burden. Schools can give handouts to students to promote CyberWellness and parents can communicate with their child about the proper way to use the internet, and also not to get too addicted in it.

Office productivity being affected

Though the biggest football tournament on earth is a good news for all supporting fans, it's still bad news for companies. It is a serious concern that the Fifa World cup would affect office productivity. A few times, the timing for the games would tend to clash with office hours.

This will not only result in employees not coming in for work, or taking a few days leaves, but also hogging the servers in the company if employees are watching it in their office since they do not intend to miss a minute of action. Some people would even go to the extent in quitting their jobs just to not miss any games because it only takes place once every four years.

This shouldn't be happening at all because people should be more responsible, they should finish up their work first before doing anything else. Employees have to balance their life with football and work but yet, they have to seperate it as a different entity. Though the football tournament only occurs once every four years, and employees still have the rights to deserve a time off to enjoy it so as to pay off their hardwork, but still it should not affect them from working.

My blogging experience

For the past few weeks, I have learnt to be more aware of the happenings and current affairs around me. Interesting topics such as Plagiarism, Cyber Wellness, Environment Day and Emotional Intelligence has caught my interest in finding more information on them. Blogging on current affairs and issues definitely changed my outlook, my point of view and the way I look at things.

After blogging on the topics such as Plagiarism and Cyber Wellness, I have came to know how important it is not to copy other people's work or stealing their ideas, and the importance of safety and security online. One must also have integrity and be responsible enough for their own actions. Illegal downloading of information and documents are examples of cyber crime. Therefore, knowing more on these two topics will prevent me from commiting all these crimes and to use the internet safely with responsibility.

On the other hand, I have also learnt more on environmental issues. Many animal and plant species around the world are disappearing at a fast rate and there is a high possibility that they will become extinct. This is a very major issue that I think everyone should be aware of and should also do a part to conserve the environment. This has definitely made me more concern on environmental issues.

In conclusion, blogging on these topics has definitely changed my outlook. I have learnt to look at the bright side and be more positive with the things that happened around me. I am also becoming more mature and responsible for my own actions. Before I act, I will think twice.

Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, feel, use, communicate, recognize, describe, identify, manage, understand and explain emotions. It is said to be a powerful key to effective leadership.

In the workforce, most employers nowadays are looking for people with high Emotional intelligence so that they're able to contribute to their company. This is due to people with high emotional intelligence tend to be more successful in life than those with lower emotional intelligence. Examples of these people normally possessed self-awareness, self-motivation and good relationship skills.

A person with a high emotional intelligence is also capable of understanding the feelings of others. Therefore, they are better at handling relationships compared to those with a lower emotional intelligence. This means one is able to secure better relationships with colleagues at work or even the people around you. With such capability, one will definitely succeed in life. According to the article, `Emotional intelligence' a new hiring criterion, "the ever-increasing business emphasis on technology and globalization means more communication, cooperation, and teamwork is necessary to get projects completed on time and on budget". Hence, with better relationship and strong teamwork built with colleagues, better decisions and agreements among each other can be done easily.

On the other hand, most of us would think that there are people who are born with talents and thus they become successful. But that is wrong, what they did was to develop the ability to understand their own emotions, inspire and understand the emotions of others. Even if we are born with certain emotional intelligence, this is a skill developed and it is definitely not a kind of talent.

In conclusion, emotional intelligence is a very important ability that we should all develop if we want to solve personal, business and social issues in a more effective way, achieve our goals and have a happier relationship. Talent and IQ is definitely not enough to be successful.

Low Office Productivity during World Cup Season is OKAY!

World cup only happen once every 4 years and it only last around 2 months. Thus, how can it compare with employees that worked for years in their office?

Therefore, I think that employers shouldn’t complain about the low productivity and should close one eye for the employees as to “reward” them for helping the company for years.

Secondly, not everyone is interested in soccer. Mainly men are interested. Thus, there are definitely enough employees that are not interested to cover up the space for those who watch soccer and affected their office productivity and work performance.

According to the website given by Mr Chris, in china, a worker actually quit his job to watch soccer. I bet his job is not even stable at the first place. Or else, in an economic crisis like this, how many people are willing to watch soccer with an empty stomach. Thus, majority of the people will know the priority and will not quit their job for world cup Especially in Singapore where our country is not participating in the world cup. Thus, people who are interested, are only interested in the country they support, thus, they won’t spend every night watching soccer and thus, their office productivity won’t be much affected. Another type of Singaporean who watches soccer is because of gambling. Thus, they can just check live score and therefore, their office productivity won’t be affected as well.

In conclusion, employers are making a big fuss about small matters. In Singapore, World Cup season will not affect the office productivity. Even if it does, employers should close one eye as their employees had wholeheartedly served their company for years.

Self Reflection

After few weeks of blogging, I have learnt the importance of keeping up with current affairs and news. Before this blogging on world current affairs, I was unaware about all the affairs that are happening around me. For example, without the blogging topic on “MOE reducing the weightage of Mother Tongue”, I will not know that MOE had this idea of reducing the weightage, which I’m totally, disagree with the idea.

Besides focusing on Singapore’s education, I have also learned to focus on Singapore as a whole. Through the 2nd topic, “How can Singapore stay young forever?” I have learned think of alternative factors for individual and government to keep Singapore young and competitive for other countries.

Regarding the 3rd topic for “Plagiarism”, I have learned that Plagiarism is also considered as a serious offends. Be it big or small matters, people must not steal someone’s ideas. I’ve also realized my mistake of copying information from the internet and paste it on my own project report without crediting the author. Thus, after learning about Plagiarism from blogging, I had stop copying information from website directly without even changing the words or without crediting the author.

Lastly, the topic “Conserving the Environment” is my favorite topic. Since young, I’ve been taught to conserve the environment even by doing small things like switching off the lights when I do not need them. However, blogging had also allows me to look deeper into this topic and know how much damage human had cause to the world.

Overall, besides learning on how to write my own comments on each individual topic, I’ve also gain awareness and understand the happenings around the world.

Office Productivity

Office productivity is often affected by distractions, especially during the world cup period where by all the office workers are dying to watch the country they are rooting for and itching to leave work early. As a result, they lack concentration and focus on the task at hand which lead to the decrease in office productivity.

There is plenty of options to be able to watch the world cup and still able to cope with work. I agree with what the article had mention; Prioritize. Identify which tasks must be done and which can fall a little by the
wayside. complete the urgent and important task first, by doing so, they are able to make time to watch the game without worries and also the impact on office productivity will be lesser.

Another way that was mentioned, is by bringing forward deadline and having an excellent time management. A list of specific and
achievable tasks with set deadlines can do wonders for time management. A looming deadline can make people work faster provided that they can handle stress well. In my opinion the best method is to become your own boss, yes although more work will pile up but you have no string attatched, able to break your own rules, with decent disciplinary and planning it will turn out fine.

Personally, I think it might work if the company work together to bring the deadline of the work foward so that it does not clash with world cup game timings.

English Language

English is said to be one of the most important languages in the world, but how important is it? English might be the one and only language that truly links the whole world together. It is needed for communications all around the globe. As English is so widely spoken, it has often been referred as a "World Language".

According to the news article titled "Beijing steps up English-language drive", China has make it compulsory for most of their citizens to master English language, from as young as kindergarden kids to adults in the working industries. This shows that China is trying to catch up with other countries and do not wish to be lag behind. Speaking good English in China do bring them benefits in their economy since China is the second largest trading nation in the world and the largest exporter and second largest importer of goods. This also allows citizens in China to communicate well with others when working or studying in other countries.

In Singapore, our Government has adopted English as the official language in 1956, therefore English Language is made compulsory for all students. It is the only language that links the whole of Singapore together as Singapore is make up of different races and religions with different mother tongue languages. Therefore it is important for us to communicate well so that conflicts would not occur.

In my opinion, English do bring benefits to the economy and culture as well. With different races and religions in Singapore, citizens are able to communicate well in English with each other and exchange ideas or even their own cultures.

Cyber Wellness

The Internet has become an integral part of modern life. With the increasing use of the Internet as a source of information for research and project work, it is important for everyone to take note of some of the danger when using the Internet. The only solution to this problem is not to ban us from using the Internet but to know how to protect ourselves and know the proper use of the technology. The term Cyber Wellness refers to the positive well-being of Internet users and a healthy cyber culture for the Internet community. It is also defined as being responsible, respectful and rational, as well as being alert to scams. It is important for one to know how to protect themselves when using the Internet such as blogging, online surfing and gaming.

According to an article on Asiaone.com, a study have shown that Singaporean teens spend an average of 17.2 hours on the Internet each week, most of them don't know much about cyber-wellness. This is seen as a serious problem and if it's not handled properly, cyber crimes might occur. Illegal downloading of information such as movies and songs are example of cyber crimes, as they are copyrighted. Another commonly seen cyber crime is cyber bullying.

In my opinion, both parents and school are responsible in educating the youths in using the Internet correctly. Schools can use informative pamphlets or handouts to education youths on the legal and illegal activities online. On the other hand, parents can try to communicate with their children about online responsibility and the proper use of the Internet. Another way is to encourage teenagers to manage their Internet usage well and try to spend more time on other leisure activities instead.

Education of our young Internet users is important to promote a culture of safe and responsible use of the Internet. Therefore it's best for them to start as early as possible, in order to be more careful of certain things that are going on in the net.

World Cup fever.

Office productivity is now a major concern of managements. With low office productivity, it will affect employees' performance at work and employers' business as well. Office productivity cannot be measured and therefore, there is no way to ensure that actions taken can improve performance and achieves tangible results. The recent World Cup games is one of the example to have caused office productivity to fall, soccer fans are prepared for one whole month of late nights and bleary-eyed mornings.

All three articles by three different countries provide information on how office productivity is affected by the recent World Cup game. Employees are willing to sacrifice their sleeping time or even ask for a few days' leave in order to catch their favourite game. Some of them can even lie in order to get their leaves approved. In China, employees are also willing to quit their job in order not to miss the game as this event takes place once every four years. All these are causing the productivity in office to fall.

On the other hand, employees can also be distracted at work by the games going on around the world. They might be surfing the net watching replays on the matches or posting comments on forums, during office hours. These actions are most likely to cause the increases in bandwidth consumption in office, therefore causing the crash in company servers. Consequences such as a longer time is needed to download important files or opening business-critical applications will occur.

As World Cup is the greatest sporting event in the world and people do not want to give it a miss, I feel that employees have the rights to enjoy the game during this period. If they want to take a little bit of time off or want to go early to watch a game, they will make up that time elsewhere by doing overtime work in future. Otherwise, they can choose to start work earlier in the morning, therefore, they could finish up their work and leave earlier as well. With proper time-management, people can enjoy the games after a long day at work.

Self-reflection

After blogging for 4 weeks, i am more exposed to the happenings in the world with topics such as enviromental degradation has helped me to increase awareness. Topics such as plagiarism, weightage on mother tounge and singapore stay young forever has broaden my knowledge as well. I found that the topics i blogged are more intresting than i thought.

The topic on plagiarism has reminded me not to commit such act for it is a serious crime, punishable by law. Ultimately, display a lack of integrity and and respect for the work of others. Before i read this article i had no idea that plagiarising was THAT a terrible thing to do, i for one was guilty of it. like the article mentioned, people are not aware of doing it! After reading it, i'm ashamed to have commited it and in a way i will sub-consciously remind myself not to plagiarise and not to be so dependent on internet and books for resources.

The topic that left me a deep impression was one the enviroment. Topics like plagiarism, spliting on weightage of mother tounge and singapore stay young forever is an issue on a different scale and can be easily handled by the authorities, while enviromental degradation is a non-reversable process that would affect the entire population of the earth and even the next generation. A major problem that requires the co-operation of everyone not only the authorities, to solve it. I'm sure that we all have a part to play, do not under estimate every little effort we as an individual make for it makes a difference as a society, thus it makes me feel important and valuable in the society. I would like to be positive regarding the enviromental issue, as they say, there is only 1 problem but there are many solutions.

In conclusion. The 4 weeks of blogging has been very fruitful. Picking up habbits such as reading up news papers and magazine every once in a while. Being more aware of my actions.

Conserving the enviroment.

Global warming; Humans are responsible for destroying the earth.
Harmful gases are release by the factories that will destroy the earth’s ozone layer. Poisonous substances are also leak into the rivers that cause animals that live the in river to die. Animals that rely on them for food also face danger, and the cycle goes on. Deforestation in Kalimantan is also one of the factors that caused global warming. As people needs space for agriculture activities, recreation, mining etc, such deforestation cannot be avoid.

Animals end up suffering for us.
Polar bears in North Pole, animals facing danger of extinction.
However, human remains ignorant.
Fortunately, the government had come out with plans to reduce deforestation.

Government had come out with advertisement and education to remind and teach people to conserve the environment.
My part in conserving the environment is to use fan instead of aircon, reduce bathing time in order to save water, switch off the lights when not in use. Outside, never throw rubbish on the floor. Through all these simple things in life, every one of us can do a great part in conserving the environment.

It’s our part to save the earth.
If I can do it, so can you!

Conserving the environment

Various species of animals and plants around the world are facing the risk of extinction due to the destruction of the habitats and climates caused by human activities such as deforestation and pollution.

Animals and plants such as the Arctic fox, leatherback turtle, koala, beluga whale, clownfish, emperor penguin, quiver tree, ringed seal, salmon and staghorn corals are also affected by the change of the climate due to global-warming.

To raise public awareness of the importance of biodiversity and the consequences of its lose to human well-being, the United Nations has marked 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. The United Nations has also organized a high-profile meeting at the Paris headquarters of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO which involves heads of states, royalty and their representatives – emphasizing the importance of resolving environmental issues.

In my opinion, ordinary civilians can also do their part in conserving the environment by reusing, reducing and recycling waste products and supporting environmental policies. As consumers, we can also support products are made from eco-friendly materials.

Plagiarism

It is a good thing that the schools in Singapore are starting early by teaching students about plagiarism.

As students usually gather information from the web for their school projects, it is important that they are understand and respect the rights of the author, as well as to give credit.

Primary school pupils are merely children of 7 to 12 years old, they probably do not know that it is wrong for them to ‘copy and paste’ certain information from the web and pass it off as a completed work of their own. Thus, it is essential for the students to know that copying information from the web is as bad as physically copying a friend’s work.

In higher-level institutions such as polytechnics and universities, the penalties for plagiarism would normally range from having a fail grade, suspension, or even expulsion in the serious cases. Therefore, it is vital for students to have a firm understanding about plagiarism at the primary level, to prevent them from committing the mistake unknowingly when they are older.

Biodiversity

More and more animals, plants and species are disappearing and becoming extinct due to rapid environment changes and also, human activities. In which, this leads to sudden drops in the biodiversity of species.

When over-fishing occurs, there might not be sufficient fishes left for the future generations to consume. Therefore, laws are implemented to reduce over-fishing for the the benefit of the people. Vulnerable species like the Arctic fox, Leather-back turtle and Koala are starting to extinct because of the climate changes. The fault partially lies on the people, because of the Carbon Dioxide they produce from factories and car petrol. Too much Carbon Dioxide will lead to the depletion of ozone layer, which eventually causes global warming whereby temperature will increase and cause water level to rise and change the precipitation pattern. Not only carbon dioxide, oil spills that isn't cleared immediately will block oxygen from getting into the ocean, thus not allowing the water species to breath, therefore results in deaths of the species.

In conclusion, I believe that everyone should be more cautious towards the environment and do something about it to reduce the drop in the number of extinctions.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a form of cheating, when you use someone else's words or ideas and pass them off as yours. It can occur anytime and anywhere. One might not even be aware when it occurs. Plagiarism may happen even if it is on purpose or not which makes it hard for one to distinguish.

Comparing both articles, it shows that the Government is taking action against plagiarism. In Singapore, when plagiarism occurs, penalties like suspension or a failed grade will be given. While in Tokyo, penalties like dismissal will also be given. To prevent plagiarism from happening, cyber-wellness education is given to students, so that they will be more familiar with the concept of intellectual property.

Imagine if you're the one who came up with the idea, and found someone plagiarize it without permission or even without crediting you. Won't you feel unappreciated? All in all, one has to put themselves into other people's shoe. And also, because of the copyright infringements, people may sue you if you are found to be plagiarizing their ideas which would not end up pleasing both parties either.

Singapore staying young forever.

The key reason for the city-state to flourish is to be young. Singapore has been independent for the past years, and has maintained in being young and dynamic but the past success does not guarantee the same for the future. Thus, Singapore should continue striving hard by being active and adapt to changing environments.

In my opinion, Singaporeans should continue striving hard in the education segment because whatever they learn will help them achieve success and is the best investment for their future. This does not only applies to the youngsters, but also the old age because usually employers tend to recruit people who are well educated and well-equipped. Therefore, the old age should also continue to upgrade their skills though they might have been retired.

Singapore has to be an active and bustling city where people live, work and play so that Singaporeans can bond and communicate with each other, regardless of race, religions and social backgrounds. Such movements proves that Singapore is young and active. An example will be creating Marina Barrage where events, like marathons, will be held. Hosting events like the Youth Olympic Games and F1 has definitely helped Singapore in being young, because it encourages both young and old to take up sports and get involved in it, and has made Singapore more well-known in the eyes of other countries.

Enviromental awareness

My response after reading the article was that people should start to cultivate habbit to sustain and if possible, improve the enviroment . Infact we should all have cultivated such habbits long ago if not for human greeds, self-indulgence and the lack of vision to roughly forsee the more serious consequences of our own actions going against the mother nature for our own selfish benefits.

In the 21st century no one is able to live without money which is why we go through education to raise our market value as a person to get a well-paid job in the society. The enviromental detioration is not so much contributed by the people who works in the tertiary industry, is the people that work in primary & secondary industry. These people rely on cutting down trees to produce furniture and fishing to sell in the market for our daily consumption as their main source of income this is more commonly practice in the poorer countries as they need money, however they over did it, neglecting the enviroment for thier own economic benefit. As a result of deforestation, it lead to depletion of ozone layer which cause global warming, killing fishes and animals living in the cold regions such Antartica and the North and South Poles due to the loss of habitat. Excessive fishing will lead to extiction of fishes and other sea creatures in years to come, which was addressed in the article Quoting "then we are in the situation where 40years down the line we, effectively, are out of fish". This is a major problem as many people rely on fishes as their souce of food and nutrition.

Its good news that goverment has step up on this issue by introducing the restructuring smaller boats that -once fish stock recover- would be able to land bigger catch, also creation of marine preservation and allowing the fish stock to recover before fishing them again.

Having all said and done, men are not entirely to blame for our enviromental decline. The world we live in cultivates and in a way teaches us to be competitive, survival of the fittest, thus men continue to strive for success by all means even on the expense of the enviroment. Measures and laws implemented by the goverment would only be successful if the people agrees to coorperate even so it would only slow down the process of enviromental detioration for it is an inevitable outcome.

But nonetheless we should all treasure the earth for it supports lives. Everyone has a part to play.

Plagiarism

The dictionary defination for Plagiarism is "The unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. "
In my opinion, Plagiarism means taking one person's things or ideas without their consent or permission.

In our daily life, plagiarism occurs all the time unknowingly, be it on purpose or not. Even if we found out that some people are copying or using another person's work without crediting it, we would not bother to remind the person or we will find that it is perfectly alright and it is not against plagiarism.

For example, when doing project. We get our information from the wikipedia and copy them and put it as our own work. However, how many of us will admit that we are using the ideas of other people instead of ours?

Another example that i have found myself, http://www.blogskins.com/, is a website that people create their own blogskin and post there for other people to use. I found out that most of the blogskin that people created used photos from the internet and edit them through photoshop and make the photo theirs. Most of them did not credit the photographer and instead, they credit themselves for the photos that they took from the internet.

How would the author feels about this when they saw their own work being copied and was credited to another person? If plagiarism continues, the author will not have motivation to create more ideas because they will not be credited or appreciated.

In conclusion, using ideas from other people is not wrong, however, we do have to respect the author by crediting them.

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious offence to commit by any person. It is my strong belief that it is important to respect, value and understand the rights if the author as well as awarding credits for thier hardwork, Having an academic credentials falsified, i believe is a shameless act and it just shows the person's lack of integrity.

It is a huge relieve to hear that goverments of respective country are taking actions against anyone found to have commited an act of plagiarism. Wed, Apr 28 2010. In japan, the president of Tokyo University has revoked a doctorate degree it had conffered after confirming that the Turkish assistant professor has falsified is academic credentials and plagiarized his doctoral thesis. The university president has decided to take drastic measure against plagiarism by implementing stricter screening and harsher penalites to candidates violating the copyrights infringement. In my opinion the president has made a wise choice in implementing such measure, ensuring a decrease in number of people commiting such shameless act. I believe that success is earn through hardwork and perserverance, not cutting corners by taking credits of others and make believing accademic credentials.

Here in singapore, the MOE(Ministry of Education) has also taken measures by educating students about plagiarism even in primary school. MOE suggested schools tp incorporate cyber-wellness in thier curriculum. Having these programs will help students to familiarize with the concept of intellectual property. Often in school's handbooks or campus, academic codes of intetgrity are spelled out to create awareness among students on plagiarism. Disciplinary actions such receiving a fail grade, counciling, suspension or even expulsion would be applied to students caught commiting the act of plagiarism. In my opinion, its only fair to have such rules implemented as it would help to gauge the actual calibur of a student and awarding them what they deserve.

In a nutshell, i'm absolutely against the act of plagiarism as i believe it is wrong having to duplicate someone else's work and claiming as yours. Be it a minor or a major assignment, test or examination, it should only reflect an honest and true result of our own hardwork and capability.

The importance of conserving the environment.

Many animal and plant species around the world are disappearing at a fast rate and there is a high possibility that they will become extinct.

Endangered species like the arctic fox, leatherback turtle and koala are facing serious extinction by the loss of ice, increasing sea levels and storms etc. Demand for animal resources directly or for the natural resources constituting the animals’ habitats are examples of human activities. Global warming also affect many things in many ways. It changes the climate, temperature and habitats, allowing these species to lose their lives.

"Ordinary people are not powerless to stop these tragic losses". This tells us that everyone do play a part in reducing human activities to prevent animals extinction. In my opinion, immediate action should be implemented to protect what little habitat is left in many areas around the world. Conservation and breeding programs can be encouraged. Reducing waste and switching to renewable energy can also help to slow down Global warming. Human beings should be responsible for their own actions as well.

Biodiversity is essential for our existence because the earth's biological systems and processes provide us with food, shelter, fuel, clean water and clean air. Biodiversity also provides all other species with the resources they required for their survival. Therefore, without biodiversity, we would not be able to survive.

Plagiarism.

Below are my views on two articles on plagiarism.

Plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.

On the article titled "Schools stress to pupils: No copying", as young as primary school pupils practised plagiarism in their work. Although cases are as low as one case per year, it is still important to educate the pupils to tell them the importance of copy rights. Teaching the pupils on plagiarism should start as early as possible, this will bring benefits in their future and further education. Through talks and workshops on cyber wellness, pupils will tend to know more on what are the wrong things they should avoid doing on the internet. In this case, both teachers and parents play an important role in educating their children with the right values.

Another article titled "Tokyo University to crack down on plagiarism in theses", an assistant professor was caught to falsified his academic credentials and plagiarized his doctoral thesis. In my opinion, plagiarism can lead to serious consequences, especially when one has stepped into the working society. Plagiarizing other people's work is a serious offence, this could allow one to pay a high price for it.

Plagiarism can occur anywhere, be it in school or at work. In my opinion, self-discipline and self-control are needed, so that it will not lead to all the wrong-doings. One must also be responible for their own actions. If there is a need to copy, we ought to give some credits and respect the rights of the original author.

How can Singapore stay young forever?

Being a vibrant and sustainable global city, having a strong culture of education and learning, as well as a culture of seeking knowledge, innovation and ideas are key factors to keep Singapore young forever.

In the past few years, Singapore is consistently coming up with new attractions to attract tourist and investors into Singapore. For example, at a height of 165m, Singapore Flyer is the world’s largest Giant Observation Wheel and is set to be one of Asia’s biggest tourist attractions. And recently, the Marina Bay Sand had opened and it has attracted lots of tourist to spend in Singapore. Therefore, with all these attractions, it will improve Singapore’s economic.

Secondly, Singapore is currently facing an aging population. In the long run, government has been spending money to encourage family for having more children. Besides that, Singapore also needs to be a magnet for talented foreigners who share its citizens' ideals and dreams, and have a strong and forward-looking leadership.

Lastly, Singapore tries to make friends with other countries, is will help to prevent conflict and also as a protection.

Underpinning it all is a strong and forward-looking government that can tackle the challenges Singapore faces. This means having the right people in charge. It also means continuous leadership renewal.

Forever young Singapore

A strong culture of education and learning was the first key point mentioned by DPM Teo. In my opinion, by pursuing education pathways that matches our interests and individual abilities, the education and learning journey is important to everyone of us as it can help us achieve success in our future. As stated in his speech, "A strong culture of education and continuous learning keeps our people fresh, young and relevant, no matter what their ages are", thus, everyone of different ages and generations can learn and also receive education, this is the way to keep their minds young and in the future, they are able to achieve success with such skills and knowledge. Picking up a new skill or learning a new language will only bring advantages to people.

In my opinion, having more casinos and intergrated resorts does not keep Singapore "forever young". Crime rates might rise up due to unhealthy gambling habits. As mentioned by DPM Teo, we want Singapore to be a vibrant global city, a city where people want to live, work and play, it also has to be an environmentally sustainable city. Therefore, if we want a comfortable, safe and sustainable urban life, we must not have so many casinos that can attract the people to be addicted to gambling.

On the other hand, hosting more world-class events will keep Singapore "forever young". These events includes the upcoming Youth Olympics Games and the recent Formula One race. These integrated events will make Singapore more well-known in the eyes of the other countries. More countries will get to know us even though we are a small island. The upcoming First Youth Olympics Games will be hosted and held in Singapore. This will create a lasting sports, culture and education legacy for Singapore and youths from around the world, as well as to enhance and elevate the sporting culture locally and regionally.

No reason to do so.

In my opinion, Ministry of Education(MOE) should not reduce the weightage of Mother Tongue language in major examinations in Singapore such as Primary School Leaving Examination(PSLE).

Firstly, by reducing the weightage of Mother Tongue language, it is being unfair to students who excel in their Mother Tongue language. They may ask, “Why not reduce the weightage of English language instead?” Quoted from Asiaone news, "PSLE should reward those who work hard to excel in Mother Tongue, not 'punish' them by reducing its weighting." Therefore, there is no reason why Mother Tongue language should be treated differently from English language.

Secondly, if the weightage of Mother Tongue language is reduced, students will have the thinking that their Mother Tongue language is not important. This thinking should not be accepted as Mother Tongue language is the root of every culture. Education should not just emphasize on academic results but also on the well-being of students and their appreciation towards their culture. Therefore, it is important that Mother Tongue do not lose its standings in the education system.

Lastly, Mother Tongue language is a very important tool in the competitive business world. For example, for a Chinese businessman doing business in China, Chinese language is indispensable when doing presentations and meeting clients. Some may argue that that they could hire a translator, however, it is a very inconvenient and insincere way to do business. It gives the other party a bad impression and somehow loses their respect, as well as the business deal. What’s more, China will very soon be an economic superpower, meaning that the Chinese language will be extremely important.

So in conclusion, we must not reduce the weightage of Mother Tongue language.

The negative and positive side of the issue.

Definitely there will be pros and cons if the Ministry of Education reduce the weight of Mother Tongue in examinations like the PSLE.

By reducing the weight of the Mother Tongue language will benefit students who come from English-speaking homes. It helps to lessen their stress and work load. English is also a common language used to communicate with other people in the whole wide world, rather than Mother Tongue. For example, all examination papers are written or printed in English and not in any other language. Singapore has always been encouraging foreign talents, thus more foreigners tend to stay in Singapore permanently. When foreigners start studying in Singapore, and start taking Mother Tongue as one of their subjects, they'll tend to struggle because it's not one of their native language. Some people also feel more comfortable in their second language because their mother tongue might be very limited and does not provide a large number of words or expression.

The negative side on reducing the weight of Mother Tongue is that it will not benefit students who are more fluent in their Mother Tongue, than in English. Singapore is a multi-ethnic society and Mother Tongue is used to indicate the language of one's ethnic group regardless of race, religion and social background. Mother Tongue expresses each culture of society to the complete satisfaction of it's members. It also indicates the identity and sense of belonging of each person.

Since our education system prides itself on meritocracy, I, therefore, think that reducing the weighting of Mother Tongue will undoubtedly go against it. In conclusion, the Ministry of Education should not reduce the weight of Mother Tongue.

-Kimberley

More harm than good

In my opinion, the Ministry of Education should not reduce the weighing of Mother Tongue in the PSLE because such action will only do more harm than good to Singapore's education system.

Due to Globalization, regional economies, societies, and cultures have become integrated through a globe-spanning network of communication and trade. Thus it is clear that students who are equipped with the ability to speak different languages would be at the advantage in the future society. For small countries like Singapore whom most important asset is its human resources, Singapore should not risk losing out to foreigners who take up a second language.

Although most of the students in Singapore are from english-speaking families, reducing the weighing of Mother Tongue should not be deemed as an option to allow students to concentrate in other core subjects like English, Mathematics and Science. If such policy is to be implemented, it will cause a wrong impression that Mother Tongue is inferior to the other subjects, thus students will not put in effort in the subject. Without a basic foundation for Mother Tongue, students will then have to suffer in secondary schools as Mother Tongue is still a compulsory subject in 'O' Level examinations.

As quoted in the article "Don't fall for easy route",
In conclusion, mother tongue may be hard to learn and make it difficult for a pupil to get into a good secondary school. However, that is no excuse for taking the easy way out. In the long term, MOE is not helping society by lowering the bar, but hindering the next generation of leaders who may be less fluent in their second language.

Pros & Cons.

There are both pros and cons in the issue of reducing the weightage of Mother Tongue language in the PSLE.

By lowering down the weightage of Mother Tongue in the PSLE, it do help students with lesser language abilities as all students have different strengths and weaknesses. Thus, students with weak language skills will be able to do well and concentrate well on the other subjects. On the other side, students with a stonger language skills are at a disadvantage. Quoted from the article, S'poreans split on Mother Tongue weighting, it states that 'Children from disadvantaged families who may be strong in Mother Tongue will be kept out of the best secondary schools.'

Secondly, the bilingual policy was introduced many years ago. All students are to study their subject-matter curriculum through the medium of English, but they are also required to take another subject which is their official mother tongue language. Mandarin for Chinese, Malay for Malays and Tamil for Indians. It has been practised for many years and has been going on smoothly thus they should not reduce the weightage of Mother Tongue in the PSLE.

Singaporean's spliting on mother tounge's weighting (michael's response)

There are two sides regarding the issue.

Firsltly, by reducing the the weighting on Mother Tongue will do 'justice' to english-educated student as there are many foreigner, such as people from China that uses their Mother Tounge(chinese)to give them the edge to qualify to the top secondary school, especially in PSLE as only 4 subjects are being examined thus playing a big part in the student's aggregate score, to top it off, foreigners from countries such as phillipines and thailand, which are singapore's neighbouring countries, they are struggling with Mother Tounge as they are not offered their native languages as a result their PSLE aggregate suffers.

Secondly, recducing weighting on Mother Tongue may not be such a wise move. Quoting from the article http://news.asiaone.com/News/Education/Story/A1Story20100511-215458.html (After the meeting, the KGMS said in a statement that such a move would result in students paying less attention to the subject, reduce curriculum time on the subject and weaken pupils' command of the Mother Tongue, it said.)(It may also undermine the welfare, morale and quality of Malay teachers: 'They will feel the subject they teach is 'second class' compared to English, Science and Maths, and consider themselves 'second class' teachers.'). This shows that it will cause much unhappiness in the education sector in singapore.
